Air-wiping
The Air-wipe material handling system was developed by South Atlantic in 1982 as a means to hot dip galvanize long bar shapes in a manner that results in a smooth uniform coating over the entire length of the bar, but without the drips or rough edges often associated with hot dip galvanizing. This proprietary handling equipment is used in conjunction with our regular galvanizing kettles and can easily be put in place between shifts as production schedules require. Material processed using the Air-wipe equipment has the same zinc alloy coating as all other material galvanized by South Atlantic, eliminating the uneven coating weights associated with First-in-last-out dip processes, and the added benefit of post-galvanizing air knives to remove any drips or roughness.
South Atlantic uses the Air-wipe equipment to galvanize angles, flats, rounds and light beams marketed by our Steel Products division, and to produce ASTM A767 Class 2 galvanized rebar for fabrication after galvanizing which is marketed by our Reinforcing Products division. The Air-Wipe equipment is not available for use on customer-owned material.
